After a contentious election season and several days of world-on-edge waiting, a new president elect is chosen!
Of course, sore losers abound
The tasks Biden faces are huge, with the Covid epidemic back into “exponential growth mode” and a divided nation. Biden won by sevaral million votes but nearly 50% still voted for Trump. California exports to Arizona and a reinforced democrat vote in the upper Midwest sealed the victory.
It’s the end of Summer and it’s the same ‘ol thing…
Amazing sunset tonight with smoke from nearby fires.
I was walking the lake this weekend nearby these incidents.
It didn’t make the news but woke up Friday morning to a SWAT team across the street surrounding a guy in a car. About 15 police with guns out. They shot out his window and arrested him. Never found out what he did for all that.
Other sad weekend news:
Locals are starting to organize to document and confront the bad behavior around the lake and trying to engage the city council and Mayor. I don’t think the city has the stomach or resources for it though.
So much bad news this week. At a local level there were two deadly shootings 1 block from our place, one occurring at noon while I was on a conference call! I heard the shots and found out later what had happened. There were a few stabbings also, and major vandalism with firestarting at the courthouse and some nearby apartment buildings. It’s so scary to even go outside now with the zombies running around constantly.
Covid continuing to spike in many states causing things to shut down again.
9.5% decline in Q2 was the worst on record:
Trump sent a tweet about delaying the election..WTF??? (it wasn’t received well)
It seemed okay when new infections were hovering around 20K per day but unfortunately there’s a huge spike now and we are accelerating through 50K per day.
California and other states have rolled back openings. There is still outdoor dining but all indoor places are still closed and fireworks shows for the 4th of July cancelled. People are tired and don’t want to be told what to do so still gather at parties, etc without masks. Hoped to be out of this by now but it looks to be a long Summer. Some other countries have opened up but are banning Americans because we can’t get our shit together.
Protests and social unrest are still occurring and businesses downtown still closed and boarded up- I don’t think many will survive. There’s been a huge spike in illegal fireworks and these huge explosions regularly occur nightly now until 1am shaking the windows and disturbing sleep (and pets). One bit of good news is the unemployment rate improved to 11% from 14%.

The year 2020 always seemed like the far future but this hopeful future arrived in tragic fashion and has accelerated month by month into uncertainty and increasing chaos.
